Reducing our footprint

At Langdon, we are conscious of our impact on the environment.  Written into our code of conduct is our committment to taking reasonable standards of care to protect the environment and to provide for the health and safety of all employees and the communities in which we operate around the world.

Some examples of recent initiatives at Langdon include;

Smart Energy Generation & Storage

Our 26,000sqm climate-controlled warehouse, located in Victoria, is substantially powered via hundreds of solar power panels. In addition, our recent upgrades to the Culinary Centre, reception and meeting areas have largely used energy saving components & energy efficient lighting. We continue to see major benefits from our vast array of panels and general energy-aware practices, including a carbon reduction equivalent to 418,632kg in coal production, in the last 12 months alone. Similarly, at Paraweena, our solar panel installations generate most of our power needs, particularly powering our large freezer and chiller storage areas. In other site locations, the Tesla Powerwall battery system has been installed, reducing our reliance on the grid by 30%, with solar the main source of energy production.

Sustainable Sourcing

Sourcing sustainably means that farmers and farm workers can improve their living conditions and earn an income they can live on. It also helps to maintain and improve soil fertility, enhance water quality and availability and protect biodiversity. Our approach is to work closely with our suppliers and help them improve their farming practices and minimise the environmental impacts.

We also work closely with our suppliers to help establish and implement policies and procedures that protect the environment on an ongoing basis.  It is never a ‘sit and forget’ approach, but one of continual improvement.

Design practices

As our operations expand across the globe we ensure our sustainable practices are embraced in our office fit-outs.  A recent example is our new premises in South Melbourne, designed with sustainability in mind.

Recycled Materials:  Re-used and upcycled Cork floors are throughout the second and third floors. Reusing materials saves on the costly and water-intensive process of manufacturing cork. The water tank that adorns the rear rooftop balcony is also made from recycled PU products.

Energy Saving:  Double glazed windows throughout, solar panels to generate passive electricity power, and hydrothermal heating systems on each level form the basis of the building’s energy-saving plan. Combined with blackout blinds, ducted cooling, and naturally ventilated bathrooms the building has a very green footprint.

Naturally Cooled and Illuminated:  With glass floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the top two levels, natural light is plentiful, and the use of overhead ECO-LED lights is only needed above workstations throughout the day. With the double-glazed windows being capable to fold back 90 degrees, fresh air is plentiful and ensures the ducted system is needed rarely.

Langdon will continually improve its business performance and conduct its operations in an environmentally responsible manner, clearly reflecting a commitment to fostering the sustainable use of the Earth’s resources. We are focused on initiatives that

  • prevent pollution, reduce waste and reduce consumption of resources such as materials, fuel, and energy;
  • look to recover and recycle, as opposed to disposal wherever feasible;
  • promote throughout the Company a strong environmental ethic as part of our culture;
  • provide training and education for our employees as appropriate; and
  • support efforts by our customers and suppliers to establish and implement policies and procedures that also protect the environment.
